We all know how the beginning of May feels for students. Once the warm weather rolls in, student motivation fades, and the eagerness to learn turns to laziness while they wait for that final bell to ring. Before running away from school and closing textbooks for the season, use these 4 tips to check in with your child and promote a strong end to a great year!
Goal Check-In ⭐
Goals are a great way to keep students on task and focused towards the end of the school year. We know that goals can change throughout the year, but make sure that even if they’re changing, they’re still reachable. Touch base with them about the goals they set in the beginning of the year and see if they’re still on track. Try helping them select one or two small goals that are challenging but attainable before the school year ends. This could be memorizing a higher number on the multiplication table or reading a book above their grade level.
Routine Check-In ⏰
Just like students, parents start to slack off too towards the end of the school year. 9:30 pm bedtime turns into 10:30 pm, and homework nights don’t seem as important since there’s only a few weeks left of school. However, sticking to your routine is crucial to implementing responsibility and perseverance. Sunny days and looming summer vacation shouldn’t stop your school-year schedule! Make sure to maintain your at-home routine with your children so they can continue their at-school routine during the school day.
Supply Check-In 🖍️
At the end of the school year, we know that pencils have no erasers and crayons are loosely floating around in bookbags. Make sure that your child is equipped with supplies that are usable as this can help encourage them to continue applying themselves to the best of their ability. Having a fresh set of writing utensils and an unused notebook can motivate your child to let their creativity flow—even when others may want to slack off at the end of the school year!
Teacher Check-In 👩🏫
Teachers and instructors hold the key to a successful school year, especially during those last few weeks where every submission and attendance counts! Set up an appointment or encourage your child to meet with their teacher to go over their progress for the year. Be sure to ask if there are any missed assignments worth turning in, or any extra credit opportunities that can be worked on before the school year ends. Meeting with their teacher before school ends can push your child to stay on top of their work and remain focused while all they think about is summertime relaxation!
The end of the school year is not only crucial for academic achievement, but for character development as well. With these check-ins, you can make sure that your child is ready to take on those last few weeks of school head-on and motivated! Ice-cream and sleeping in are right around the corner!
